of the things they knew was that these groups were present in benghazi, they were well-organized, they have an infrastructure to them. they also knew of the presence of al qaeda sympathizers in the area, pockets of sympathizers. they also knew -- and we found this out from an intelligence source, there was an intelligence cable 48 hours before this attack took place that warned about the presence of this anti-muslim film on the internet. not only that, but that they had seen an up tick in the traffic visiting that site, that obviously this is a sign that this is gaining more popularity. cnn also found out that they had further indications that parts of this film were shown on egyptian television. that was according to an fbi memo that cnn was able to get a hold of. so all the clues were sort of there. now piecing them together was a different story. u.s. sources have told us, intelligence sources, that there was no actionable intelligence. as a matter of fact, the administration has been very open about coming out and saying that. so some clues were there, pulling them all together is a tou

in benghazi at the u.s. consulate there. we've been in touch with the state department, again, they are not coming forthwith a confirmation yet. they do tell us there is one american not identified who has been killed after an attack by islamists. they were protesting an independent film made in the united states said to be critical of the muslim prophet, mohammed, and gotten some play on the super net in the arab world. that is rousing up feelings. according to reports, again, unconfirmed reports, the u.s. ambassador was killed when he and others were trying to get other staffers out of the consulate in benghazi, libya, which was under attack, which have, in fact, burning down. a rocket propelled grenade flying around the car that they were in as they were trying to get in in that very dramatic scene. folks, this followed yet another assault on the u.s. embassy in cairo, egypt yesterday. again, protesters there very angry about this very same film. they scaled the walls. they tore down and burned the u.s. flag there. they displayed a black flag with arabic writing. no injurie

that said "thugs and killers do not represent a benghazi or islam." the president of the palestinian authority, who worked closely with chris sent me a letter of remembering his energy and integrity and deploring "an act of ugly terror." many others from across the middle east and africa have offered similar sentiments. this has been a difficult week for the state department's and for our country. we have seen the heavy assault on our post in benghazi bad took lives of those brave men. we have seen rage and violence directed at american embassies over an awful internet video that we had nothing to do it. it is hard for the american people to make sense of that because it is senseless. it is totally unacceptable. the people of egypt, libya, yemen, and tunisia did not trade the tyranny of the dictator for the tyranny of a mob. reasonable people and responsible leaders in these countries need to do everything they can to restore security and hold accountable those behind these violent acts. we will, under the president's leadership, keep taking steps to protect our personnel around the

gadhafi and killed in a city, benghazi, that he helped to save. i understand that there are 200 marines being sent to libya. what do we know about the tk orders? >> 200 marines who are already in the region, they are aboard one of those flat-top helicopter carriers in the iranian sea. they are called amphibious ready groups, and they are called f.a.s.t. teams prepositioned in all parts of the world, but particularly the hot middle east region as we see here. it should not take long to get those 200 marines who will be particularly equipped for the mission there in tripoli. this is not some kind of military operation or a strike of any kind. they will be armed with small arms and anti-riot gear and the like as opposed to going in for a military strike or operation. now in addition to that preparations are under way, too, to send additional f.a.s.t. teams, maybe not in the same numbers, but one to cairo and one to kabul. we know from past experience there has been violent and deadly sectarian flare ups against americans in kabul over some of the actions of american troops there that were
